Sample Checkout Policy/Departure Information Checklist

Communicate your checkout policies clearly to renters to avoid misunderstandings and delayed checkouts

Avoid placing notes everywhere in your properties regarding checkout, it just looks tacky. Instead include the notes and checkout policies as a "reminder" when you send the directions. The checkout policy is clearly stated in my rental rules (which I have the renters sign and return). Always keep a copy of your rules and checkout policies in your guest book as well.

Here's a sample of a checkout policy:

Departure Information

Before departure please be sure to do the following:

  • Take out all trash to the dumpster.
  • Load and run the dishwasher.
  • Lock all doors and close all windows.
  • In winter turn heat to 58º F.
  • In Summer turn air to 85º F.
  • Leave the keys inside the lockbox.
  • Sign our guest book.
  • Leave by 10 am.
  • Have a safe journey home.
