Ask Christine #30: Filing Taxes for Housekeepers (Transcript)
Christine answers the question of filing a 1099 for your housekeeper.
Christine Karpinski: Today's question comes from Amy, she asks:
Q: "Do I have to file a 1099 tax form for my housekeepers?"
A: Amy, the answer to this question is "Yes." As long as you have paid more than $600 in the 2008 tax year to your housekeepers or maintenance staff, or anyone else, you should file a 1099 Miscellaneous tax form for your housekeepers.
This form has to be filed to the IRS by February 1st of 2009. When you file this form you will need the EIN number, which is an Employee Identification Number, or you could also use your housekeeper's Social Security Number.
One form would be mailed to your housekeeper; the other form would be mailed to the IRS, and the third form you would keep for your own records. So the answer to your question, "Yes, you do have to file a 1099 Miscellaneous form and file it with the IRS."
