Ask Christine #20: The Benefits of Short Term Rentals (Transcript)

Christine answers a question from a homeowner who wants to know the benefits of renting her home as a vacation rental.

Host, Christine Karpinski: Today's question comes from Ellen. She asks,

Q: "I have a second home that I think I might want to rent out for some extra income. What are the benefits of renting my home as a vacation rental, rather than a traditional long‑term lease?"

A: First off, when you're renting to vacationers, it's a different type of renter. A lot of times, they are upper to middle class families that are homeowners themselves, instead of renting on a long‑term basis to someone who most likely is not a homeowner and is looking for someplace to have as their primary residence. You can actually make more income because you can charge more during the peak weeks.

Another reason that you may want to rent it as a vacation home is a lot of times the renters will treat your home better. It could be less wear and tear. One of the most important reasons that I think to rent it as a vacation home instead of for a long term lease is you get to use the home yourself. If someone is in there all year, you don't get to enjoy it. This way you can mark off days that you and your family can continue to enjoy your home.
