Owners' Favorite and Least Favorite Parts of Renting

Results from our April Question of the Month regarding the highs and lows of renting vacation homes.

We asked vacation rental owners what their favorite and least parts of renting their vacation homes were.  Here's what they had to say:

"My favorite part of renting is when prospective guests say they want to go ahead and book one of our homes for their vacation. It's like YAY...We made a sale!!! (and that means $$$$ for us)." -Sandy, Bryson City, NC (HomeAway #133735 & VRBO #3362)

"Meeting the nice people over the phone and getting positive feedback after their stay." -Rick, Panama City Beach, FL (HomeAway #185820 & VRBO#169198)

"Having return guests contact us again. Getting referrals." -Dottie, Orange Beach, AL (VRBO #71210)

"I love sharing our home and introducing people to West Michigan.  I love making vacations special for others." -Doris, Grand Haven, MI (HomeAway #178510 & 322166)

"Sharing our beach house with renters that appreciate it." -J. Wagner, Outer Banks, NC (HomeAway #132778)

"Allowing other families to build memories with theirs." -Wendy, Long Barn, CA (VacationRentals.com #1494)

"I just started managing our vacation rental through VRBO and really enjoy the challenge of marketing our place, as well as the satisifaction of knowing that renters enjoy our condo." -J, North Myrtle Beach

"Knowing how little I worked in comparison to having a 40 hr. a wk. job and the amount of money I've taken in." -Anonymous

"Getting comments from our guests regarding their stay." -Anonymous

"My wife and I have met gads of real neat people from all over the USA and the world. Many have become friends that we have into dinner and or drinks. They send their relatives and friends who are just as neat." -Frank and Sandy, Venice Beach, CA (HomeAway #157275, VRBO #59196

"I feel a sense of achievement booking all of the key weeks. I like the fact that I get the same people coming every year and I buy things for the villa that I would like for my vacation. I think of the guests as my own guests so I want them to have a nice time and to enjoy and care for the house like it is their own. It is a pleasure to create a nice home and have people enjoy it. One meets very nice people." -Mairead, Cannes, France (VRBO #90463)

"The satisfaction people find the rental better than they expected. Clean, roomy and homey." -Silvia

"Helping pay the mortgage."  -Anonymous, Kissimmee, FL

"Defraying expense somewhat." -Nancy, Seagrove Beach, FL (VRBO #35753)

"I try to made all renters my friends prior to their arrivals so they will take good care of our homes. When they don't respect our homes, I am always disappointed." -Sandy, Bryson City, NC (HomeAway #133735 & VRBO #3362)

"Rude people who ask for prices and never bother to respond." -Rick, Panama City Beach, FL (HomeAway #185820 & VRBO#169198)

"Seeing our condo phone number on our caller ID. Dealing with snowbirds. Having renters ask for a discounted rate during high season." -Dottie, Orange Beach, AL (VRBO #71210)

"It always hurts me to say "No" but sometimes prospective renters try to bend the rules.  I've found that in the long run, having clearly defined policies and sticking with them makes everyone feel more secure." -Doris, Grand Haven, MI (HomeAway #178510 & 322166)

"Sharing our beach house with renters that don't appreciate it." -J. Wagner, Outer Banks, NC (HomeAway #132778)

"Cleaning fees and limited cleaning professionals in the area." -Wendy, Long Barn, CA (VacationRentals.com #1494)

"Living 12 hours away, I sometimes worry that the keys will not be put back for the next renter. I also am concerned that my housekeeper/manager will unintentionally get check-in check-out days wrong and the condo will not be ready for the renters. There is also the concern that renters will ruin or destroy thing in the condo." -J, North Myrtle Beach

"I clean mine myself, manage it, make the reservations, etc., etc., etc." -Anonymous

"Not getting responses from people who inquire - would like to know the reason they didn't select our condo." -Anonymous

"Sometime we have a problem arranging a cleaner for a quick turn around. Just some times though as we use a family with lots of members and someone will do the job because we over pay a bit." -Frank and Sandy, Venice Beach, CA (HomeAway #157275, VRBO #59196

"Time wasting enquiries and scammers. People who try to negotiate for the sake of negotiating. They may not be serious enquiries at all. It actually does not work and it is better to stick to what you think your property is worth.  I have very little damage to the house so that has not been an issue." -Mairead, Cannes, France (VRBO #90463)

"Updating the rental rates, never sure what the right mix is." -Silvia

"People that try to "low ball" you; i.e., Can you rent your property for $300 a week including all fees? My not-so-polite answer is that I own a 3/2 bath condo not a cheap hotel room." -Anonymous, Kissimmee, FL

"Wear & tear on the property." -Nancy, Seagrove Beach, FL (VRBO #35753)
