Should You Accept Pets in Your Vacation Home?

Are you debating whether you will accept pets in your property? What you need to consider when determining a pet policy for your vacation rental.

When deciding whether or not to accept pets in your vacation rental home, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. It's fine to accept pets, and it's fine to say no. Just realize that anytime you eliminate any group of renters, you are narrowing your spectrum of potential renters, which means that you may have to work a bit harder to attract the renters that you do want to rent your second home.

For owners who do accept pets, be sure to require that your guest's pets are treated at least 1 week prior with a topical flea control such as Advantage Flea Control. This is especially important in woodsy areas where ticks are a concern and on the beach where sand fleas are a problem.

According to the Travel Industry Association of America, more than 29 million Americans took trips of more than 50 miles with their pets during the past three years. Almost 80% of those travelers took dogs. About 15% of travelers took cats, while the rest took birds, ferrets, rabbits or that quietest traveler of all, fish.

A quick note: Here are some links to the Humane Society's web site. They have suggested pet policies and other useful information for property owners who accept pets.
