Six Ways to Lower Your Water Bill at Your Second Home
How to save money at your vacation rental by improving the water efficiency of your home.
You may not be able to control your guests bathing and cleaning habits, but you can do a few things around you vacation home to improve your water efficiency.
• Fix leaky faucets. A slow, steady drip wastes 330 gallons of water each month. • Install aerating, low-flow faucets and use 60% less water. • Install water-efficient showerheads. Showers account for 20 percent of total household water usage. Choose a showerhead than allows less than 2.5 gallons per minute and save 20,000 gallons of water each year. • Place a plastic bottle filled with water in your toilet tank to save 11 gallons of water per day. • Replace older (before 1992), larger-use toilets with the new ultra-flush models. • When it's time to replace your hot water tank, buy the most efficient one possible. |

For under $25, you can install two low-flow showerheads, place bottles in the toilet tanks, install low-flow aerators on faucets, and repair dripping or leaky faucets and toilets. Just these few changes can save up to 30,000 gallons of water annually and will pay for themselves in under a year.
