Christine's Blog: The 2008 NAREE Conference (5/13/2008)
Christine talks about what she learned from her panel at the 2008 NAREE Conference.
Hi Everyone,
Well I'm back from the National Association of Real Estate Editor's conference. This year there was a lot of chatter about the not-so-great state of the real estate market and the current state of the mortgage industry.
We heard from many prominent speakers, including Charles McMillan, the president-elect for the National Association of REALTORS® and Brian Montgomery, the Federal Housing Commissioner.
I also chaired a panel discussion. The speakers on my panel were, David Motley, President of Colonial National Mortgage, Jerry Ray, Senior Vice President Strategic Alliances for St. Joe Company, and Jim Dague, Broker of Century 21 Advantage Gold. We'll definitely be asking all my panelists to be podcast guests so everyone can hear a touch of what was discussed last weekend.
Here's a very brief overview of what the individual panelists spoke about:
Mr. Motley spoke about the mortgage process for second-home owners today. He noted that in today's market, the documentation required to obtain a mortgage has gotten increasingly more cumbersome. He also gave some personal accounts of buying his first vacation home back in the 1980's, which really seemed to put things into perspective.
Mr. Ray spoke about the Panama City Airport Project that St. Joe is working on. This will be the first new international airport built in the U.S. since Denver's airport. He also talked about the long-term benefits that this airport will bring in regarding tourism and growth for the markets surrounding Panama City Beach.
Mr. Dague spoke about the long-term history of both the macro and micro second-home markets through his experience as a National Association of REALTORS® Resort and Second Property Specialist instructor.
I look forward to conducting podcasts with all the panelists so you too can hear the news right from the sources.
Happy Renting!
