Christine's Blog: 4th of July Weekend and Using the Find Feature (7/7/2008)
Christine explains why she doesn't use her own homes on the 4th of July and shares a handy keyboard shortcut.
Hi everyone!
Hope you had a wonderful July 4th weekend. I sure did—we stayed home and relaxed all weekend. People always ask me why, if I own so many places, don't I ever go to one of my vacation rentals for the 4th of July?
My response—you couldn't pay me enough! And it's not because those are great revenue weeks. It's because I do not like having to fight the crowds. All of my properties are in big tourism destinations. Around holidays, the traffic is unbearable, the stores are packed and the restaurants have 3 hour waits. Why in the world would I go then when I can easily go any other time of the year? Do you stay at your vacation home on holidays or do you rent it? Take our poll and let me know!
The other day I was talking to another owner on the phone and we were looking at a website. I was trying to direct her to find something on a page but she couldn't seem to locate it. I told her to just press “Control F” but she had no idea what I was talking about.
Basically, it's a shortcut key stroke to help you find something on a webpage. I am so horrible on the computer that I have figured out all the shortcuts to save me time. So here's the full explanation of that shortcut.
While on a webpage, in MS word or in a PDF document, you can press Control + F, then type in the word or words you are looking for and it'll find all those words on the given page. (You must simultaneously press the “Control” key and the “F” key. The Control button is at the bottom left corner, marked as CTRL on most keyboards. On Mac computers, the Control key is the same as the Apple key.)
NOTE: This function is especially helpful when you are looking for your own property on VRBO's landing pages (the page that lists all the properties in your region.) Type in a word from your headline and it'll find that word on the page. If you find that word is pretty much on everyone's headline, then you probably should rewrite your headline with a more unique word so to help make your property stand out from the rest.
Depending on the version of the software you are using, the Find feature will either appear on the bottom of your screen:

Or in its own window:

In PDF documents, it usually appears at the top of the page in your menu bar:

Hope that helps some of you that didn't already know about this feature. Have a great week!
Christine
