Christine's Blog: Disappointed with a Housekeeper (1/13/08)

Christine talks about her disappoinment with the condition of one of her Destin condos.

Hi everyone!

So last week I told you about how I arrived in my cabins and everything was perfect. This week I’m going to tell you about what happened when I arrived at one of my condos in Destin…and let me preface this by saying that I did not tell our housekeeper we’d be coming. We just showed up!

When I walked in, the place looked pretty clean at first glance: the floors were clean, the bathrooms were immaculate and the kitchen was spotless.

But once we really started moving around and opened cupboard and closet doors we noticed something very wrong. Everything was a cluttered mess! Things literally fell onto the floor as we opened one closet. And our balcony, which is around 34 feel long, was littered with stuff - rusty old beach chairs, sand toys, rafts, fishing nets, etc. (Renters buy things and just leave it there, but the housekeeper should toss that stuff out!)

And the straw that broke the camel’s back was when I got into bed that night. I pulled back the quilt to find the bed made with the cheapest, thinnest, most pilled sheets I had ever seen! Then I went into the bathroom and noticed there were tiny, and I mean tiny, bath towels that were not much thicker than a layer of skin.

Quite frankly, I was mortified. I take great pride in how I equip my vacation rental homes, making sure to have the highest quality sheets and towels (plus I say so in my advertisements) and I know that my guests really appreciate it.

Where in the world were my 600-thread-count Egyptian Cotton sheets? And what about my nice, big, thirsty 30"X 54” towels?

Honestly, my first thought - my renters stole them….nope! That’s not what happened.

When I opened my owner’s closet I found all my sheets and towels in there.  As you can imagine, I called my housekeeper right away. She told me that it’s just easier for her to use a linen-pool so she wouldn’t have to keep track of my things.

Wow, this brought to the forefront something that I know but have often taken for granted - I’m only as good as the people I hire. No matter what I do to make my properties perfect from 1000 miles away , I am 100% dependent on my housekeeper to follow thorough and carry out my wishes.

Yes, I have gotten a new housekeeper.

Happy Renting!

Christine

Have you ever been disappointed when you arrived at your vacation home?

"Yes! I had a pair of striped sheets and white sheets to alternate between tenants. Upon checking my unit, I noticed the striped sheets were being used for the 2nd week, not alternated, When confronted, the cleaning company admitted that they had not washed the sheets and were simply putting on unwashed/used sheets. They were fired that day." - Shelley, Okaloosa Island, FL (HomeAway #151289, VRBO #99813)
