How to Build a Library and Watch it Grow: An Easy Vacation Rental Amenity
Where to buy inexpensive books and which types to consider.
Many travelers take a vacation to escape and unwind. For many, this means curling up with a good book. Including a small library of books in your home is an inexpensive amenity to add that your guests will appreciate. Consider adding a library of varied books to your property to entice potential guests and to give future guests something to do on a rainy day.
Where to Find Inexpensive Books
- Your Primary Home (Free). Before you set off to the bookstore, look around at home. Do you have any books sitting around that you're unlikely to read or re-read in the next year?
- Garage Sales (25¢-$1.00 each)
- Thrift Stores (75¢-$2.00 each)
- Used Bookstores like Half Priced Books ($1.00-$5.00 each)
Types of Books to Consider
- Childrens' books ranging from picture books to short chapter books.
- Easy-to-read paperbacks by popular authors like John Grisham and Michael Crichton. These are often found at garage sales and on the clearance rack at used bookstores.
- Classics like Moby Dick, A Tale of Two Cities, or To Kill a Mockingbird. These can be picked up for less than $2.00 at most used bookstores.
- Nonfiction books about your vacation home area's history, wildlife, or sites.
After you start a library, it will likely grow with little additional effort, since some of your guests may leave new books at your vacation home after they've read them. If you're looking for a cheap and easy extra to add to your vacation rental, consider starting a library.
