As a citizen of Okaloosa County, I/we respectfully request the 2007 Legislature address the property tax issue. Over the past several years I/we have experienced double digit increases in property taxes.
The economy in Okaloosa County largely depends on the tourism industry to generate jobs and revenues. As a result of the large number of second homes and vacation rental properties, a large percentage of the taxable properties are non-homesteaded, creating a financial crisis for the second home/investment property owners.
Due to rising taxes coupled with the rising cost of windstorm insurance, the second home, vacation rental market is severely impacted to the point the overall economy of the area is in jeopardy.
It is our recommendation that the Legislature take a serious look at placing a cap on property tax increase on second home and investment properties. A cap would provide surety to this sector of the market and revitalize the flat market.
