February 28, 2007: Upcoming Meetings in Hawaii March 1st, 9th, and 12th

More information about upcoming meetings affecting current Hawaii vacation rental owners.

#1) The Kailua neighborhood board will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. at 21 S. Kainalu Dr at the Kailua District Park. The board will discuss Senate Bill 750, which is proposing that the state TAT tax records be shared with Honolulu County. The purpose of this bill is to not only catch people who have TAT licenses, but do not pay their tax and also to reference and find people who do pay TAT licenses, but do not have a license for short-term rentals.

We oppose SB 750 because we believe that while we are in the process of trying to bring back the ability to get short-term rental permits, enforcement should not be a focus. It also seems inherently unfair to punish the people who want to be legal and are paying their taxes.

Please bring signs to make the point how many are against this Bill. no one expects you to testify. Leave it to us who have nothing to lose. You can choose to testify or not, either way your presence will be a silent testimony.

During the next two days, pro-vacation rental community members be lobbying at the capitol against SB 750. All 25 offices will be visited with our message. We are asking that it be deferred for a year and that a legislative auditor conduct a study on what kind of violations justify such a bill. We will list why it is a bad bill and mention we do not have current rules and regulations to allow us to be permitted. Monday, the Bill will head to the Senate floor.

#2 ) “Meet the New Candidates Night” at 6:30 p.m. March 9 at St. John Lutheran Church at 1004 Kailua Road.

The Kailua Neighborhood Board will soon elect new board members. This is vitally important to Kailua residents who have or support bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals. The current board members have a majority who not only oppose vacation rentals, many are also members of separate groups who have made it their mission to shut vacation rentals down. The board has consistently been voting on measures according to their own personal agendas and dismissing community testimony. This is clear by reviewing minutes of neighborhood board meetings. Our Neighborhood Board is an important voice for Kailua and we need to be informed before we cast our votes. There are 15 new candidates running for board positions, but the majority of candidates running are incumbents. Come see for yourself who you want representing you. #3) Leeward Coast vacation rental owners take note: The Waianae Neighborhood Board meeting on March 12, has “Save Oahu Neighborhoods”, speaking about non-permitted short term rentals.

Save Oahu Neighborhoods is a group started by Larry Bartley, currently a Kailua Neighborhood Board member.
