August 29, 2007: Okaloosa Citizens Alliance in Push to Engage Voters

Group formed to examine local taxation and budgetary process.

FT. WALTON BEACH -- A diverse, non-partisan group of local business people, educators and former politicians have joined together to take a closer look at local taxation and budgetary processes, with a goal to promoting more effective and cost-efficient government. The group, Okaloosa Citizens Alliance Inc., is kicking off its initial membership campaign today and expects to attract a large group of interested citizens.

B. Kabe Woods, President of the group, is looking forward to promoting a more involved citizenry in the processes of government. “Over the last 18 months, I have attended a lot of budget meetings and have been disappointed at the attendance. I know that citizens can make a difference if they are engaged. We plan to help citizens become engaged by delving into budgets and taxes, informing citizens of areas for concern, and working with elected officials to address these issues”.

When asked about the possible adversarial nature of these types of groups, Mr. Woods responded that “We view ourselves as partners to all the stakeholders involved. We are going to be looking closely at budgetary and taxation processes and reporting our findings. We will keep our findings factual and accurate and work with elected officials as well as citizens to raise awareness and get more folks involved in the process. Similar organizations already exist in Walton, Bay, Franklin and other counties throughout Florida which are proving quite effective.”
