Entering Guestbook Comments for Renters to Submit

The easiest and quickest way to get guests to submit reviews.

We've all been there – you have a great experience with a new product or receive assistance from an exceptionally helpful store clerk. You have the best intentions of submitting an online review or sending a note to his/her supervisor, but after the fact you simply forget or don't make the time. So how can you make it simpler and quicker for guests to submit a review about your vacation home after returning to their busy lives?

Go straight to your best source – the physical guestbook at your vacation home.

Many guests are more inclined to write a review while curled up on the porch swing or relaxing on the chaise lounge while they're still on vacation. They're in the moment, they have the extra time, and the guestbook is sitting right there just beckoning to them to make an entry.

Yes, those entries are nice to read afterwards and entertaining for future guests to peruse, but how can you make them known to all the prospective renters out there?

If you live near your home, simply pick up the book every once in a while and type up the reviews yourself. Then send them off to the appropriate renters and ask them to submit online to the site(s) where they found your listing. The work has already been done – all they have to do is enter an email address and click submit!

If you don't live near your home, it might be a little trickier. When you visit your home for maintenance or a personal stay, take some time to type up the reviews. You could also ask your housekeeper or a neighbor to simply dictate the entries over your voicemail or possibly do the typing for you if they're feeling generous. Even if it means having your housekeeper ship the guestbook to you, it can be worth it for those extra reviews on your listing.

As consumers, we like to see things in person before committing, but for vacation rentals this isn't usually possible. Allowing travelers to read reviews from past guests could make them choose your property over another less-reviewed home.

How do you build renter reviews for your listings?

"I send an email after guests have arrived home making a few choice comments. First I say I hope they have made it home safely, then I thank them for choosing us, and I let them know when they can expect to receive the refund of their security deposit. Of course make your message personable and nice. I end my message with " I would love to have your comments and thoughts of your stay on my online guestbook for future guests to see. Just click on the link below and add your comments." And then I am sure to add the link to my online guestbook. It's just that easy." - Teri, California.  (VRBO 78703)

"I usually get an email during or after guests have stayed in our place in France. If there are positive comments I want to quote, I write them and ask if it's okay for me to put them on our web page. I also offer them the alternative of posting something themselves, but they have never preferred to do this; they just say go ahead and write it. (or, at times they don't respond, so I don't use it.)" - Judy, Provence, France. (VRBO)

"The day after my guest's departure, I send a thank you email thanking them for staying at our home, asking if there was anything that could have made the stay better, and mentioning that we would appreciate if they would leave a comment in our online guest book (making it a link directly to the guest book), as well as submit pictures for our guest slideshow. I then send out a similar handwritten thank you note that also includes a magnet that I had custom made with a picture of our home and our contact information (so it can go on the fridge and remind them of the wonderful time they had!). This has resulted in 16 reviews in only 10 months of our home being available for guests." -Tyann B, Branson, MO. (HomeAway 167204, VRBO 138158, VacationRentals 20808)
