British Columbia Sales Tax In British Columbia, owners offering short-term accommodation for four or more units are required to pay a Hotel Tax.  Visit the site for information on filing and FAQs.

Short-Term Rental Regulations & Permit Requirements

Short-term rental regulations vary by district within British Columbia based on the zoning bylaws.*  Here is some information on rental regulations in certain areas of BC: 

Central Okanagan: Currently, there are no specifications regarding rental periods in residential zones.

Columbia Shuswap: Short-term rentals are not allowed in residential zones.

East Kootenay: No restrictions.

Sechelt: No short-term rentals in residential zones.

Tofino: No restrictions.

Whistler: Some properties are allowed to be used for both residential and tourism purposes.  To rent out a vacation  home, the property must be located in a tourism or commercial zone.  Properties that only allow for residential use must not house tourists for less than 28 consecutive days. 

*These restrictions are subject to change.  Check with your local tax office or Chamber of Commerce for more detailed information.
