How to Market Your Vacation Home to Fishing Enthusiasts

Guide to baiting and hooking recreational fishermen and women.

For many travelers, the recipe for a perfect vacation includes a fishing pole and a body of water. If your vacation rental home lies on a body of water-- whether a mountain stream, prairie lake, or the Atlantic ocean-- it's probably a good idea to consider targeting this group when equipping your home and writing your ads. Even if you don't own a fishing cabin geared for anglers, your property might still appeal to certain types of fishing hobbyists. While you may be a fish out of water in regards to fishing, potential renters may not be.

Many owners mistakenly assume that their property might not be ideal for vacationers looking to fish during their stay. In reality, fishing properties vary in type from rustic cottages designed primarily for fishing outings to luxury lodges equipped with hot tubs, steam rooms, and outdoor kitchens.

Who Comprises This Segment of Travelers?
The types and levels of fishermen* (and women) traveling to your area will depend on your vacation rental market. Some may travel to your market primarily for fishing, while others may be traveling for another purpose, but are looking to grab their poles while they're there. Since the types of fishermen will vary from avid anglers to families enjoying a leisurely afternoon on the dock, it's important to consider your own vacation home and vacation rental market.

Popular Types of Fishing
Big Game or Deep-Sea Fishing:  Big game fishing, also known as offshore sports fishing, is popular in a variety of both ocean and fresh water vacation rental markets including Hawaii, Florida, California, and Mexico. These fishermen typically seek out larger game fish like tuna, sharks, and marlin.

Kayak: Similar to big game fishing, the art of fishing from a kayak or catamaran is growing in popularity in states like Florida, Texas, and California.

Fly Fishing: This favorite of sports fishermen is popular in many lakes and streams markets such as Flathead, Montana, and throughout Alaska and Colorado.

Lobstering/Crabbing: The hunt for these feisty crustaceans takes place primarily in New England, Canada, and Southern California.
Catch and Release: Catch and release fishing, a big hit with many fishing hobbyists, is the law on many lakes, especially those located in national parks.

What Amenities Are They Looking For?
If the primary purpose of a traveler's vacation is to fish, they're likely going to be looking for different amenities than the golfing or sun seeking set. Here are just a few of the amenities that they might be looking for:
  • A fish-cleaning station
  • Fishing poles and lures
  • Kayaks, paddle boats, or canoes

How to Write an Ad That Will Reel Them In

Target those looking to fish while on vacation in your headline. For example: “Fisherman's Paradise: Stunning Waterfront Lodge with Views.”

Include “fishing” words in your descriptions and amenities table. Note the types of fishing available, the specific fish in surrounding waters, and any equipment that you provide.

Showcase the fishing experience in your photos.

Be sure to check off “fishing” or ”fly fishing” in the activities section in your listing.

What Information Will They Need if They Book Your Home?

If your guests are likely to fish while staying at your vacation home, be sure to include information in your directions about the following:

  • Fishing license requirements
  • Local and state regulations
  • Fishing instructors
  • Fishing charter companies
  • Equipment rental companies
  • Bait and tackle stores
  • Nearby fishing docks or piers
  • Rules for bringing fish into your home
The Bottom Line: Don't underestimate fishermen of all kinds as a potential renter group for your property.

*Note: Please excuse the non-PC use of fishermen. Fisherpersons sounded a little bit ridiculous.
