The Importance Of Re-Keying Locks at Your Vacation Rental

Re-keying your locks is more than a security issue. It can save you money, time, and hassles.

Most often people re-key their locks because of security reasons. You'll go through this exercise when you buy a new property, switch housekeepers, or rent to a vacationer you don't trust, etc. Re-keying your lock is a good exception to the rule, “If it ain't broken—don't fix it."

To re-key your locks, take them to your local hardware store. They will charge around  $5-$7 per lock, including the service. It takes about 5 minutes to complete. It's most important for the maintenance of your lock. The re-keying process entails taking the lock apart, cleaning it, and oiling the lock.  This is the best way to avoid bent or broken keys, as well as locks that are hard to turn.
