What is the average housekeeping cost between renters?
Last month, we asked Owner Community members how much they pay their housekeeper or property management company to clean their vacation home between renters and how much they turn around and charge their renters.
We had a total of 75 complete responses and here's what we found:
Average Cleaning Cost per Rental
1BR: $69
2BR: $76
3BR: $104
4BR: $120
5BR: $146
6BR+: $199
A starting point to find the average cost of cleaning between renters can be found by using the formula: $20 * (BR +BA). For example, a 3BR/2BA would be $20 * (3+2) or $20 * 5 = $100.
Which Markets Vary Highly from the Average?
Higher than Average: Colorado, Hawaii, Destin (FL), and San Francisco.
Lower than Average: Gatlinburg (TN), the Poconos (PA), Costa Rica, and Disney/Orlando.
Types of Housekeepers
Individual housekeepers tend to be less expensive than housekeeping services or property management companies.
Owners who clean their own property charge their renters about the same cleaning fee as those who use individual housekeepers.
Cleaning Fees
28% of owners surveyed don't charge a cleaning fee (or they build the cleaning cost into their rental rate).
Of those owners who do charge a cleaning fee:
64% charge their renters the exact cost of cleaning.
24% charge their renters more than the costs of cleaning.
12% charge their renters less than the costs of cleaning.

How did you determine how much to charge renters for a cleaning fee?
“I charge them the same that I am charged by the housekeeper. I don't want to make a profit here, just keep my place impeccably clean and not have to do it myself!
