Christine's Blog: When Disaster (Almost) Strikes (7/22/09)

Christine has a minor scare when the electricity goes out at one of her vacation rentals

Hi everyone! This morning I had a rude awakening — one of my renters called to let me know that the power was out and had been out most of the night. They were getting to the point where they were concerned about food spoiling in the fridge, and since that property uses electric-pumped wells, they didn’t have any running water either. Don’t you know…these things always seem to happen the first night of a renter’s stay, right after they’ve gone and purchased all their groceries for the week!

My first reaction: Hmm, I hope I paid the bill! (I did...phew!) My second reaction: Hmm, I wonder if the power company screwed up my payment again. Because I own multiple properties, in the past they've made the mistake of allocating all my payments to one account, so it looks like one account is overpaid and the other accounts are delinquent. Luckily, that wasn't the case this time.

My next step was to call the power company to see if the outage was limited to my home. Sure enough, there was a power outage in the entire area. At that point, there was nothing more I could do to help my guests. I just had to sit and wait…and pray the power company would get it resolved quickly. Thankfully, the power came on about an hour later. Disaster averted!

Here’s to a happy and crisis-free summer for all!

Christine
