Christine's Blog: Revisiting Your Insurance Policy (11/6/07)

A little CNN Headline News inspires Christine to look over the insurance policies and declaration pages for her vacation rental homes.

Hi everyone!

Thankfully I'm feeling much better so I'm back in the swing of things. While I was out sick, I found myself lying around watching a lot of TV (something I don't get to do very often), which included some episodes of Oprah and whole lot of CNN Headline News (during the devastating wildfires in California.)

During the CNN broadcasts, they were talking a lot about making sure your home is properly insured. Hearing the same story over and over again (because that's how CNN Headline News operates) prompted me to pull out my insurance policies and revisit my declarations pages (the page that states the types and insured amounts of insurance) for all of my homes.

While I know I should review these documents prior to renewal each year, in reality, they just never seem to come at the most opportune times. I encourage everyone to pull out that document and look it over to see if you are properly insured.

The next thing you'll want to look at is your premium itself. Ask a few of your neighbors what they are paying (assuming your neighbor's homes are similar in size and value.) I was talking to a friend of mine and she's paying 3 times as much as I am! While insurance premiums are based on a myriad of factors (exposure, dwelling, your credit scores, etc), your premium and your neighbor's should be pretty close. If you feel you need to shop around for new insurance, be sure to listen to this podcast about insuring your vacation rental homes.

On that note, I think I'll end this blog post, and spare you all the things I learned on Oprah. :o)

Happy Renting!
