Christine's Blog: Proposed Vacation Rental Bans in Hawaii (3/2/07)

Christine addresses the reasons behind the Owner Community's new Vacation Rental Bans and Local Rental Alerts sections.

Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago I got an email from some frantic vacation rental homeowners in the state of Hawaii. There was going to be a hearing that would have affected their ability to rent their homes. They wanted to know how to contact other owners in Hawaii and let them know about this meeting that the state legislatures were holding. Thankfully we were able to send an email out to Hawaii owners to inform them about the meeting and if they could not attend, they had the option to fax in their opinions to show their support against this impending bill.

As for Hawaii, nothing has been decided as of yet, but we will all be watching.

What we realized is vacation rental property owners all around the country are facing impending bans on short-term or transient rentals. Communities in many states including California, Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, New York and even parts of Canada have imposed vacation rental bans. (You can read an excerpt about vacation rental bans taken from, How To Rent Vacation Properties by Owner, Second Edition.)

We have rolled out two new sections of the Owner Community, Local Rental Alerts and Vacation Rental Bans

The Local Rental Alerts section is dedicated to the local issues that may be affecting your ability to rent your vacation home, such as property tax issues and sales tax alerts.

The Vacation Rental Bans section will include in-depth case studies on vacation rental bans in markets across the country.  I also recorded a Podcast that explains vacation rental bans.

Be sure to check “Rental Alerts” often but remember, but we can't keep up with the whole country on our own, we need your help. If there are issues affecting your area, please Let us know.

Happy Renting by Owner!
Christine
