Christine's Blog: Preparing for Vacation (8/5/08)
Christine talks about the building excitement and the not-so-fun prep work for her upcoming vacation.
Hi everyone!
I'm in the “I don't want to be at work” mode. I'm getting ready to go on vacation this Friday and I am getting very excited. It's been quite a while since I have taken a proper vacation because visiting family and going to one of my vacation homes does not count as a “proper vacation”.
We've rented a beautiful beachfront home (directly from the owner of course!) in Exuma. Where's Exuma? It's a tiny little island halfway between The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. If that still leaves you scratching your head (it would me), here's the map.
It's always a learning experience to be on the other side of the coin, being the one who is renting the house. As the day of my departure grows nearer, there are lists of questions that come to my mind about the home and the island. Some are trivial, like is there a blow dryer? beach towels? And some are more need-to-know, like do the vast majority of the local establishments accept credit cards or should I plan on bringing cash?
Yesterday the owner of the house sent me an email asking for my arrival information so I can be greeted and walked through the home and also asked if I hade any last minute questions. I found this to be a very nice touch. It makes for a much more comfortable environment for me to ask those last minute questions, rather than feeling like I'm intruding.
But before I can leave there is a lot of prep work to be done. The time and effort leading up to vacation is no fun! I have to notify all my housekeepers of my vacation, especially since cell phone and internet connections on the island are spotty at best. I also have to have friends of mine be on alert to give authority of any major issues that could arise. And then of course there is the auto-responder on my email that needs to be set and the message on our answering machine that needs to be changed.
But in the end, I am certain all the effort will be worth it. Hopefully I will not give my rentals any thought as I'm lying on the beach, sipping my piña colada.
Is it Friday yet?
Happy renting!
Christine
