Christine's Blog: Observations about Vacation Homes and Owners (10/1/2008)
Christine shares some valuable insight on her recent conversations with owners and vacation rental stays.
Aloha everyone!
We've wrapped up the last of our Hawaii seminars, and have really enjoyed meeting all the vacation home owners that attended. The people here are incredibly hospitable, and we certainly appreciated their patience as we tried to pronounce all the street names!
I've learned a lot about the Hawaii vacation rental market, but one of the most obvious things I found was that too many owners are underselling their homes. When I talked to them, they would go on and on about their great views, comfortable linens, and special welcome baskets, but none of this information was in their listings. How are your potential guests supposed to know all these wonderful things about your home unless you tell them?! Next time you go to update your listing, really sit down and think about all the services you offer and the special touches you provide. No matter how small, be sure to incorporate these details into your vacation rental ads. It might just be enough for someone to choose your home over another.
Of course while we were gone we stayed in a few different vacation rentals, and my other big observation was about some everyday conveniences that each was lacking. We even created an article based on this experience – 12 Things Every Vacation Rental Should Have - to give everyone an idea of what they should be including in their homes. It's easy to overlook these things if you don't really get to stay in your own home, but believe me, it's hard to be on the road for an extended period without these necessities.
Hope this gives you some ideas for improving your listings and stocking your home!
Happy Renting,
Christine
