Should You Provide Paper Products?

How important is it to have paper towels and toilet paper available to your renters upon arrival?

Think back to the last time you went on vacation: What was the first thing that you did upon arriving at the vacation rental or hotel? Perhaps, you took a minute or two to look around, schlepped your bags in from the car, and inevitably took a bathroom break. How would have you felt if you reached to the toilet paper holder to find –alas—an empty roll? Would that have put you in an instant bad mood? Would your first impression of the property be negative? Would you be more likely to notice other subtle imperfections?

The answer is likely—yes.

While providing a week's worth of toilet paper, paper towels, and tissue might be a storage nightmare, at the very least, you should consider providing a few rolls/boxes to get your guests started.

Paper Products to Consider Offering:

  • A starter roll of toilet paper in each bathroom
  • 1 backup roll of toilet paper in each bathroom
  • 1 box of tissue in each bathroom
  • 1 roll of paper towels in the kitchen
Consider the paper products you should supply at your vacation cottage.
Be clear about what you provide and what you don't in your directions. Many travelers may be used to staying in hotels where new toilet paper rolls appear magically each afternoon.

Your housekeeper should supply paper products, but if not you can buy them in bulk at a big box store like Sam's Club or Costco.

The key to supplying (or not supplying) paper products like with many aspects of renting your home is communicating with your guests exactly what to expect.

What paper products do you provide? How much of each item is reasonable?

"I rent to lots of families so I like to keep multiple rolls of paper towels in the cabinets. Maybe about 3." -- Sydney A., Destin, FL.

"My guests will find 3 rolls of toilet paper, a roll of paper towels and a box of tissues upon check-in. Since we are on the beach and on a septic system, we re-supply the guests with toilet paper that is compatible with our system. They usually replace the paper towels as neede when they go to shop." - Susan, La Paz, Mexico (HomeAway #193419, VacationRentals #40013)

"We provide ALL paper products and soaps, shampoos, etc. We took a linen closet, stocked it full of all supplies needed (from Costco), put a lock on it, and gave a key to our housekeeper. She can refill laundry detergent, hand soaps, sponge/scrub pads, etc. from the large quantities in the locked closet. We restock once a year." - Mary P., Hawaii (VRBO 9632, VacationRentals #12709)

"I send a sheet with the rental agreement called "what to know before you go" with instruction on exactly what to do prior to arrival. Starts with directions and includes info of what I have ready for them as well as what they need to provide. I have starters of all paper but they need to bring all detergents and soaps. Renters appreciate being prepared." -Stephanie, Gulf Shores (VRBO #114552)
