Should You Provide Extras Like Shampoo and Detergent?

Insight into which extras you should provide for your guests.

We get asked time and time again about providing the following items:

· Shampoo and conditioner
· Dishwashing liquid
· Liquid soap
· Dishwashing detergent
· Laundry detergent
· Cleaning supplies
· Coffee and coffee filters

Buy andything you have to buy in bulk.

There are no across-the-board standards regarding these items for vacation rentals. However, a quick rule-of-thumb is to go ahead and buy anything that you have to buy in mass quantities and that last a long time. This includes dishwashing liquid, dryer sheets, and coffee filters. For items that run out quickly like shampoo, laundry detergent and coffee, consider leaving enough for your guests first day and then let them know that after that they're on their own.

Shampoo and Conditioner
Prior to 9/11, it wasn't commonplace for owners to provide items like shampoo, liquid soap, and laundry detergent for their guests. However, since TSA revved up security precautions at airports, more and more owners are now provide at least starter supplies for their guests.

If you have a lot of guests that fly into your destination, consider providing small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and liquid soap for your guests. When buying shampoo, don't worry about buying the fancy stuff—Suave is just fine.

One exception: Luxury properties. If you guests are paying $5000 per night to stay in your home, they're going to expect everything to be provided. Don't skimp of the extras.

If you do decide to provide shampoo and conditioner for your guests, consider installing a dispenser.

Liquid Soap
You should consider providing liquid hand soap in each bathroom and in the kitchen. This soap is cheap to buy, easy to refill, and much less wasteful than bars of soap.

Dishwashing Liquid and Detergent
Consider stocking up on dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent at your local big box store (Costco, Sam's Clubs, BJ's, etc.). These items last a long time and will be much appreciated.

Laundry Detergent
Your guests will run through a bottle (or box) of laundry detergent or bleach in a hurry. If you try to provide detergent for every guest, your housekeeper (and your pocketbook) won't be too happy with you.

One exception: If you ask your guests to do laundry before they leave, at least provide a small box of laundry detergent. However, if you leave a big box, don't be too upset if your renters use it all.

Cleaning Supplies
Providing cleaning supplies for your guests is a great way to keep your property looking its best and to make your housekeeper's job easier. Stock your property with basic cleaning supplies like a window cleaner, a carpet cleaner, a bleach/disinfectant cleaner, and an all-purpose cleaner. Feel free to buy the generic/no-name brands of these products. You can stock up on a year's supply worth of these supplies for under $30.

Coffee and Coffee Filters
It's a nice touch to leave a starter pack of gourmet coffee for your guests, but don't feel pressured to keep the coffee canister full. Coffee is one of those items that your guests can tear through in a week. Coffee filters, on the other hand, last virtually forever and are very inexpensive (a pack of 500 is around $3).

What extras do you provide to your renters?

"We provide a few basics but we only supply enough so that they don't have to go to the store unless they need to or if they are being wasteful.  For example, we leave a roll of paper towels, a couple rolls of toilet paper, about 8 coffee filters, etc." --John D., Wisconsin Dells, WI.

"We leave a roll of paper towels, a couple rolls of toilet paper in each bathroom, napkins and a can of coffe." -Carlos, Alexandria, VA. (HomeAway #222071)

"I may go a little overboard but I supply a starter basket full of the travel size bottles of shampoo, conditioner and hand lotion, dishwasher gel tabs, toilet paper, kleenex, a couple of packets of hot chocolate, apple cider mix, small trinkets as gifts, and if they're bringing children or pets, a couple of yummies for them." - Shari, Maggie Valley, NC (HomeAway #207565
